Michael Godsey

MBHS / The Atlantic
Teacher / Writer
San Luis Obispo
Mike is a contributing writer at The Atlantic, as well as a 10th and 11th grade English teacher and ASB advisor at Morro Bay High School. After spending more than 12 years in the classroom during the day, and coaching high school athletics at night, he took a leap of faith and switched gears entirely, trading coaching to focus on his writing. With a front-seat view of how national educational policy affects schools, and a hands-on perspective working with students, Mike began to share his observations of how broad educational trends affect communities, students, and teachers themselves.

Armed with nothing more than a blog and a brand-new Twitter account, his writing earned almost immediate traction, and in just a few months he received mentions in the Wall Street Journal, slate.com, Mind/Shift, and many others. Having himself jumped into the world of professional writing with no concrete roadmap to success, Mike is delighted to share his key learnings on how to cut through the noise and get your message heard, including: creating a pitch that strikes just the right tone, defining what makes you perspective unique, and tips to get social media to work for you (without becoming a time-suck).
