Alicia Johal is in her 12th year as an educator in San Diego, with experience working in public, charter, private and after school school programs. She has taught middle and high school science, engineering and robotics and has also served as a science curriculum specialist, district underwater robotics coordinator, new teacher induction mentor, department chair, and assistant director of innovation. Alicia is currently the Associate Dean of Upper School Academics at the San Diego Jewish Academy. Alicia has been awarded by state and federal programs for her working creating comprehensive STEM and computer science programming for under-resourced school communities. Outside of her K-12 work, Alicia co-founded the Inclusive STEM & CS Summit, an organization committed to providing quality professional development for educators focused on pedagogy and instruction in STEM and computer science. She is an adjunct professor here in San Diego, who is passionate about teaching pre-service teachers, and mentoring newly credentialed teachers. Alicia is driven by creative collaboration and presents at conferences on the topics of: equitable grading, equitable uses of technology in the classroom, authentic student-centered assessments for language learners, student agency, STEM literacy, and mastery-based teaching and learning.
