While I’ve always loved learning, I haven’t always loved school. Even though I was a GATE student, I struggled with what school expected from me. Eventually that struggle ended with me dropping out of my honors classes and spending my class time doing anything but what was asked of me.
Facing an F in English 12, I asked my teacher if I could do something risky and unexpected: something memorable. He said yes, and since then I expect and encourage the same approach in my students and in my approach to learning. I’ve been blessed to work with others in creating: #CAedchat, edcampHOME, #slowchatED and other learning adventures. When I’m not teaching you can find me at my two blogs (thereadinessisall.com and ideaFM.org) or eating at a hole-in-the-wall restaurant while talking with friends. I’m addicted to baseball, and I’m a fan of the three Hs: handshakes, high-fives, and hugs.

CUE 2015 Fall Conference Closing Keynote Description:

The Life Aquatic: This is Adventure

Nobody knows what's going to happen. And then we “try it, share it, and reflect on it.” That's the whole concept. -Steve Zissou

The stories that define us, that we share with others, are built of memorable moments. Create
meaningful, memorable moments for your learners, and the world by stepping off the yellow brick road and diving into the deep sea of pedagogy. Steven Zissou, Harry Potter, Kenny Shopsin, Frederic Friedel, and Lynda Barry are just a few of the deep sea creatures we will meet on this adventure.

Bring your wetsuit and diving equipment, no one is staying on the boat in this keynote.

*There is an overflow room for the keynote. The overflow room is A216 in the Administration Building.

You can watch the Keynotes stream live via cue.org/live

Join us after the Closing Session and keynote for an opportunity to win a Sphero BB-8 App-Enabled Droid sponsored by CUE and a BrainPOP 1 year school subscriptions of BrainPOP Jr. (K-3), BrainPOP, BrainPOP Español, and BrainPOP Français sponsored by BrainPOP.

Two things spurred my interest in reimagining what we do in the classroom. | | The first was my own experience with school. While I loved learning and reading, I was not the best student when it came to grades. I still remember that feeling when I look at my students. | | The second was the birth of my son. From the day he was born I knew that I only had eighteen years to transform his K12 experience. I share my experiments in the... Read More →
